The research, led by the University of Sydney, which is sought to determine the associations between walking speed with cardiovascular disease and cancer mortality.

The study showed that walking at an average pace was associated with a 20 percent risk reduction for mortality. Walking at a brisk or fast speed was associated with a risk reduction of 24 percent.

A similar result was found for risk of cardiovascular disease mortality. With a reduction of 24 percent for walking at an average pace and 21 percent walking at a brisk. And fast speed, compared to walking at a slow speed.

The protective effects of walking are more pronounced in old age groups. Average speed walkers aged 60 years or over experienced a 46 percent reduction in risk of death from cardiovascular causes. And fast speed walkers a 53 percent reduction.

A fast speed is generally five to seven kilometres per hour, but it depends on a walker’s fitness levels. An alternative indicator is to walk at a speed that makes you slightly out of breath or sweaty. Says lead author Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis.

He adds that in situations when walking more isn’t possible, either due to less time or the lack of a walking-friendly environment. Walking faster may be a very good option to get the heart rate up.
