Irish singer Sinead O’Connor, who ignited a global controversy in the early 1990s when she ripped up a photo of John Paul II on live television.

“This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim,” Connor announced in a tweet. She also changed her avatar to a photo of the Nike logo with the slogan “wear a hijab. Just do it.”

The 51-year-old said, “This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey. All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant.”

O’Connor further wrote, “I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada.”

In another post, the singer revealed she had received her first Hijab with the help of a friend in Dublin.

“My best friend, Elaine just gave me my 1st Hijab and she got chills all over her body when I put it on,” she wrote.

“Not gonna post a photo because is intensely personal. And I’m an ugly old hag. But I’m a very, very, very happy old hag.”

A video of the singer proclaiming the Shahada was posted to Twitter by an Ireland-based Imam.

She was still ordained, she had moved away from priesthood because “I’m not interested in causing more trouble than I already am.”
