Major midlife adverse events, such as divorce, a death of a family member, accelerating aging in the brain, a study has found.

“Having of more midlife fateful life events, particularly relating to the divorce/separation or family death, was associating with an advanced predicting brain aging,” says Sean Hatton from the University of California, San Diego in the US.

For the study, publishing in the journal Neurobiology of Ageing, the researchers examined 359 men participating in the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Ageing.

They are asking participants to tally a list of life-changing events over the past two years, which were comparing to a similar measure collected five years previously when they are joining VETSA.

The summaries are encapsulating stressful midlife events that have occurred in the first two and last two years of the past seven years.

All participants are undergoing MRI exams and further physical and psychological assessments within one month of completing the most recent self-reports.

The MRIs are assessing physiological aspects of the brain, such as volume and cortical thickness which is a measure of the cerebral cortex or outer layer of the mind linking to consciousness, memory, attention, thought and other critical elements of the cognition.

These neuroanatomical measurements were then analyzed using advanced software to the predict brain age.

Hatton says exposure to the chronic stress has long associated with a biological weathering and premature aging, linked, for example, to oxidative and mitochondrial damage in the cells, impaired immune system response and also genomic changes.

The researchers say their findings provide a possible link between a little aging and brain structure changes in response to the significant stressful life events.

Then, these are the points of describing the Stressful life events may accelerate your brain aging study.
